A Nicolini case history for marine industry

We would like to introduce you a customized motor which required some months of projecting and designing and today it is on full production with two version with different powers for limited duty servicy.
Our customer is a division of a multinational, which is part of the marine industry division.
Besides the indicated power specifications, this particular product requires a special flanging with accurate measures and shapes, a customized designed shaft and reduced sizes.
Moreover this product had to be in accordance with the following special requirements:

Special inputs
-Maximum vibration limits measured into 3 main directions
-Room temperature up to 70°C
-IP68 Protection degree

Designing
The motor had to guarantee its performance into extreme environmental conditions: the temperature range is very wide, as well as the maximum temperature limits. Our R&D department answered with outputs not requiring a forced ventilation. As requested, the motor has been manufactured with a full protection from dust and permanent water immersion, with significant pressure resistance seals. Those requirements determined the construction materials and refinements procedures as well as basic requisites like needed power, torque and peak current values, size limits and installation conditions. With this purpose, our tecnicians have identified a special alluminium alloy and choosed a particular surface treatment.
Our R&D study, along with the related total investment prospect, was the winning project chosen by our customer.
At this point, the second and third phases of the project started: prototypes realization and product industrialization.

Prototype and production
The project implied the design and production of an alluminium die-casting mould, performed also thanks to collaborations with our suppliers. Before entering the production phase, we created several samples with standard housing, which had been tested and approved by the end customer, and achieved excellent results in various electric  and resistance tests.
Subsequently several prototypes of the designed housing had been produced in order to simulate the real final product. Housing prototypes and motors had been tested and approved, allowing to proceed with the final mould production.
After two years of work, the now motor is now in full swing.
The same product is going to evolve soon in accordance with ATEX regulations.
