Hollow shaft motors designed to last

Nicolini & C engines with hollow tree adopt a design configuration with a single bearing and the precision mechanical processing carried out in-house. The tight tolerances and guaranteed concentricity are the result of direct control over the machining processes, which represents one of the distinctive elements of our production.

This architecture helps to avoid mechanical overloads and ensures several operational advantages:

  • natural alignment between motor and pump

  • Minor bearing wear

  • greater reliability over time

The Nicolini & C hollow shaft transmits torque efficiently, allowing the system the necessary settlement freedom and preventing the formation of unwanted mechanical constraints.

When simplicity deceives

Direct coupling between the engine and pump via a hollow shaft appears to be a simple solution. However, it is precisely this simplicity that can lead some manufacturers to introduce design compromises that end up compromising the overall quality of the system, such as:

  • excessively generous tolerances

  • unprocessed or insufficiently machined timbers

To compensate for the inevitable problems arising from these choices, some manufacturers add a second front bearing on the hollow shaft, presenting it as an additional security measure.

In reality, it's often a solution attempting to fix a problem that shouldn't exist.

The risk of opposing mechanical constraints

The introduction of a second bearing indeed creates a overlap of mechanical constraintsthe engine bearing and the pump bearing end up “countering” each other in an attempt to maintain their axis of rotation.

The unavoidable micro-misalignments that occur during operation are thus transformed into unwanted radial and axial loads, which over time can also have repercussions on the pump itself.

The result is a significant reduction in bearing life and a decrease in the overall reliability of the engine-pump system.

The difference lies in the construction precision

The Nicolini & C solution is instead based on a simple but rigorous design principle: mechanical precision and correct sizing, without introducing unnecessary constraints into the system.

This way, the motor-pump coupling maintains its efficiency over time, ensuring stable operation and a longer component lifespan.
